Are ristretto shots stronger?

Ristretto shots are typically considered to be stronger than regular espresso shots. This is because the extraction process for a Ristretto is slightly different than for regular espresso shots. When making Ristretto, baristas tend to use less water than for a normal espresso shot, so the same amount of coffee is more concentrated.

The result is a shot of espresso with a more intense flavor profile, robust and bittersweet notes, and a stronger “kick”. Additionally, due to its higher concentration, the drink has a sharper mouthfeel that can jolt the senses.

However, a Ristretto is not necessarily more caffeinated than an espresso, since it contains roughly the same amount of coffee in proportion to the amount of water that goes into each drink. That said, due to its higher strength and longer extraction process, the caffeine in a Ristretto can still deliver a caffeine fix more quickly than an espresso.
