Diy Master Bathroom Makeover Bye-Bye, Arizona Tan!

As 2017 drew to a close, our focus shifted from celebration mode to transformation mode. Our master bathroom was in dire need of a makeover, having been stuck in a state of beige-ness for quite some time. To say it was ‘Arizona Builder’s Tan’ would be an understatement – the entire house had this same warm hue when we first moved in, making me feel like I was wading through a sea of monotony.

Over New Year’s weekend, we decided to take matters into our own hands and give our space a much-needed facelift. This involved a fresh coat of paint on the walls and cabinets, a bold accent wall to add some visual interest, framing our mirror to create a sense of depth, and finally, adding some charming farmhouse-style decor to bring everything together.

The transformation from drab to fab is nothing short of astonishing. Who would have thought that this very same bathroom could undergo such a radical makeover, leaving us in awe of its fresh, new look.

In a moment of DIY triumph, I successfully installed the floating shelves on my own, relying on my trusty guide, ‘How to Hang Floating Shelves’, which I had previously created. The sense of pride and accomplishment was undeniable, making all the effort well worth it.

The wooden accent wall’s familiar design is no coincidence – I replicated the same look my mom achieved in her DIY masterpiece, which I highlighted in a previous post. To achieve this rustic aesthetic, I used the same pine tongue-and-groove boards from Lowe’s that my mom had selected. The process began with applying a water-based stain in American Walnut to the wooden planks. The dark undercoat gave the wood a charmingly rustic appearance.

After the stain dried, I mixed 2/3 water with 1/3 white paint to create a subtle whitewash effect. A light sanding followed to accentuate the wood’s natural texture and reveal its intricate details. You can see from the transformation that the end result is a stunning wooden accent wall that adds warmth and character to any room. The actual installation was relatively swift, thanks to the boards’ grooved design that allowed them to snap together seamlessly.

We used handsaws and miter blocks to cut the boards to size before securing them to the wall studs with a nail gun.

As part of our home makeover, we unexpectedly decided to give our cabinets a fresh coat of paint. After completing the wall painting, the outdated cabinet look became even more apparent. To tackle this project, we consulted Pinterest and followed a helpful tutorial from DIY-stinctly Made, a reliable DIY resource.

In essence, we removed all the drawer fronts, cleaned them with Krud Kutter to remove any dirt or grime, sanded down the surfaces, and then applied two coats of paint – Sherwin Williams’ Repose Gray once the paint was dry, we reattached the drawer fronts and installed new handles. A notable update from November 2018: I wholeheartedly endorse a revised approach for painting cabinets.

As we completed our DIY bathroom mirror frame, a project that proved to be surprisingly effortless and budget-friendly, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The entire process, from start to finish, took us approximately 5 days – a personal record for a room makeover, if I do say so myself. And the best part: We managed to complete the task without breaking the bank, with the frame costing a mere $10. It’s always satisfying to achieve a goal without sacrificing style or sanity.

Following our successful DIY endeavor, we’re already gearing up for more projects in 2017. What are your big plans for this year? Share them with us in the comments below.
