How do I force my iPhone into DFU mode?

Forcing your iPhone into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode can be helpful if you need to perform a firmware restore or if your device is acting oddly and you cannot resolve the issue with a simple restart or reset.

To enter the DFU mode on your iPhone, you must be sure to power the device off before you attempt to enter DFU mode.

To begin, plug your iPhone into a computer that has iTunes installed and then open iTunes. Once iTunes is open, press and hold the top (or side, depending on your iPhone model) power/lock button, and at the same time, press and hold both the Home and Volume down buttons.

Hold the combination of three buttons for at least ten seconds, and then let go of the power/lock button while keeping the Home and Volume down buttons pressed. Once you release the power/lock button you should see the normal Apple logo appear, followed by a blank black screen.

At this point, you can release the Home and Volume down buttons as you can now confirm that your device has successfully entered DFU mode. If iTunes notices an iPhone that is currently in DFU mode, it will provide you with an alert.

Now, you can proceed with restoring your device or manually installing an available firmware update.
