Why is stroke path grayed out?

The stroke path being grayed out is most likely because a selected object doesn’t have a stroke or is not an editable shape and therefore cannot have a stroke. Objects must have a stroke before you can adjust the path that creates the stroke, so if a path is grayed out, then you won’t be able to edit the path for that object.

In some cases, like with text, a stroke cannot be applied, so the stroke path will be grayed out. Additionally, the stroke path for an object may be grayed out if the object is part of a larger group, such as a shape layer or a compound path.

In these cases, all the objects in the group must be ungrouped or disassociated, depending on the program, before the stroke paths can be edited or adjusted.
