How far is the sky from Earth?

The sky is essentially an illusion created by our atmosphere, so it is difficult to give an exact answer. Generally speaking, depending upon the time of day and weather conditions, the sky is somewhere between 1 and 8 kilometers away from the surface of the Earth.

At night, it can appear much further away due to the optical illusions created by the stars and the moon. The more light reflecting off the atmosphere, the closer the sky will appear to our eyes. Therefore, the distance of the sky from Earth can vary greatly, simply depending on the conditions.

The exact distance between Earth and sky cannot be determined, since the sky envelops the Earth in a curved atmosphere, with no set end point. However, scientists estimate that the top of the stratosphere, the highest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, is roughly 30 miles above the Earth’s surface.

This is the highest point that most aircraft travel, with most commercial jet aircraft flights traveling no higher than 12 miles above the surface. The stratosphere is also the layer of the atmosphere where Earth’s ozone layer is mostly located.

Thus, when we look up into the sky and view the blue hues, what we are experiencing is the sun’s light reflecting off of these molecules of oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases, 30 miles above us.

How far is land to space?

The exact distance between land and space is difficult to answer, as it depends upon the altitude of the particular land in question. Generally speaking, space is considered to begin around 100 kilometers (62 miles) above sea level.

From the Earth’s surface, this is about three times the height of Mt. Everest. This distance is also referred to as the Karman line, which is considered to be the boundary at which Earth’s atmosphere is too thin to have any significant aerodynamic influence.

Past this point, the atmosphere becomes so thin that traditional aircraft can no longer be sustained, and a spacecraft must be used to continue further into space. How cold is the space?
