Step-By-Step Guide To Hang Floating Shelves

I’m a fan of the sleek appearance of floating shelves, where it seems like they’re defying gravity by protruding effortlessly from the walls. The illusion is indeed mesmerizing; however, I’ve discovered that the process of installing one isn’t as effortless as their appearance would suggest. In fact, my initial attempt at hanging a floating shelf was nothing short of a disaster.

After drilling a hole that was just off by 1/8th of an inch, the shelf refused to hook onto the screws and hang properly. I was on the verge of tears and utter frustration, thankfully, my handy husband came to my rescue, offering some much-needed guidance and consoling me during my low point.

As a result, I’ve learned some valuable lessons about how to successfully install floating shelves with minimal stress and maximum satisfaction; to spare you from going down the same road I traveled, I’ll be sharing my experience and providing a step-by-step guide on how to do it right. The essential tools required for this task are a level, power drill, pencil, and of course, the floating shelf itself along with its accompanying hardware. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Measure the Holes

To ensure accurate installation, first position the shelf where you want it to hang. Use a tape measure to center it on the wall. Next, flip the shelf upwards, aligning its surface with the wall. This will allow you to access the areas where the screws need to be drilled. Place a level on top of the shelf to verify its horizontal alignment. With the shelf flipped up, use a pencil to mark the screw drilling locations directly against the board, making sure your marks remain level.

Step 2: Drill the Holes

To ensure accurate drilling, start by selecting the appropriate size drill bit for your pilot hole. A useful visual aid can be found below, courtesy of wonkeedonkeetoolscouk. If you’re using an anchor, match the drill bit to its specifications; otherwise, match it to the screw you’ll be installing. With the correct drill bit in hand, proceed to drill along the marks you’ve made on your material.

Step 3: Hammer the anchors into the wall and screw in the screws. Make sure to leave the screw head protruding out a bit so the shelf can catch it.

As you proceed with assembling your floating shelves, take some time to carefully hammer the anchors into the wall. Be mindful of the depth at which you drive them in, as you’ll want to leave just enough space for the screws that will soon follow. When screwing in the screws, ensure they’re seated properly and the head remains protruding slightly, providing a sturdy foundation for your shelf’s support.

With precision, position the screws in harmony with the hardware on the back of the shelf. Effortlessly, slide it into place, a testament to your newfound mastery over the drill. The sense of accomplishment is palpable, as you’ve successfully navigated the drilling process without a hitch. Tears and frustration are now relics of the past, replaced by a growing confidence in your ability to tackle such tasks.

It’s a transformation born from the understanding that sometimes, simplicity trumps complexity. By embracing the straightforward approach outlined above, you’ll find the process a breeze, leaving you free to move on to the next project with renewed enthusiasm.
