What is the parable of 5 talents?

The parable of the five talents is a parable taught by Jesus in the New Testament. It appears in Matthew 25:14-30, where Jesus speaks of a man who, before leaving on a journey, entrusts his possessions to his servants.

He gives each of his three servants five talents, which represents a large sum of money. He also entrusted them with his possessions to use in his absence.

When the man returns, each of his servants tells him of their accomplishments. The first two had taken their five talents each and invested them, each gaining five more. The third servant had been afraid of his master and buried his talent instead of investing it; he had gained nothing.

The master rewards those servants who had been successful with their investments, but the third was punished for not trying at all.

The parable of the five talents is often interpreted as a lesson about how humans should effectively manage the resources and gifts God has given us, and use them to the best of our abilities to glorify Him.

It’s not enough to just accept the blessing and do nothing with it; we should use it to create something meaningful. The master in the parable rewards those who have tried their best with the resources they had, and punished those who wasted them.

How much is 5 talents worth today?

The exact value of 5 talents today is difficult to determine due to the fact that the value of talent has changed throughout history based on the currency and economy of a particular place and time. Generally, in ancient times, the talent could be used to refer to a number of different units of measure and currency.

To put it into more current terms, one talent could be equivalent to 60 minas, or 3,000 shekels, or even 100 pounds of silver. In terms of the US dollar, this would equate to roughly 49,000 USD per talent.

As such, 5 talents would equate to 245,000 USD in today’s currency.

What did Jesus mean by talents?

When Jesus referred to talents in the parable of the talents in the Bible (Matthew 25:14–30), He was referring to money, property, or some other form of material wealth which had been entrusted to the care of certain individuals.

In the parable, Jesus tells the story of a master who entrusted his servants with his possessions before going away on a journey. The master gave one servant five talents, to another two talents, and to the third he gave one talent.

Upon the master’s return, he received an accounting from the servants. The servant who had received five talents had increased his to ten, the servant who had received two talents had increased his to four, and the servant who had received one talent had invested it and increased it to two.

The master praised the first two servants for their stewardship and rewarded them with further increase. The master, however, rebuked the third servant for his lack of foresight and for burying his talent in the ground and his lack of investment.

In this parable, Jesus is using talents as a metaphor for potential and opportunity. The first two servants were praised by the master for recognizing the potential, opportunity, and trust the master had given them.

Furthermore, the third servant was reprimanded for not recognizing the same potential, opportunity, and trust. The underlying meaning within the parable, then, is that God entrusts us with different resources, abilities, and opportunities, and He expects us to use them and to make thoughtful investments of them.

The parable teaches us that our talents and the opportunities entrusted to us should not be wasted or looked upon lightly, but rather used to further the Kingdom of God.
