What happened to Nick Fury’s eye Goose?

Due to a mission gone wrong, Nick Fury’s left eye was damaged beyond repair, resulting in a permanent eye patch to cover the wound. It happened while Fury was on a mission to take down The Hand and rescue a young woman called Elektra Natchios.

The mission went south, and during a fight with the Japanese mafia, a grenade exploded and destroyed Fury’s left eye. At first, Fury believed the explosion had killed him, but it ended up just taking his eye.

He’s been wearing an eye patch ever since, and the events of the mission are alluded to in the movie Iron Man (2008).

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fury’s eye patch is directly inspired by the comics, as it featured in several storylines from the early 1980s. The eye patch became an iconic part of Fury’s look, and he even faced off against a duo of super villains called the Hood and Eye-Scream, who specialize in stealing people’s eyes.

Needless to say, the eye patch gives Fury a unique edge in combat, providing him with both a depth perception and situational awareness advantage.

The character’s eye-patch was first introduced in the Marvel comic book series of the same name, in Volume 4 #1. In the comics, after he loses his eye, Fury uses a cutting-edge technology called the “Infinity Formula” to stop his aging.

The formula also helps with his healing process and keeps him looking young, though his eye can’t be restored. This element of his story from the comics was left out of the movies, as Fury already has a natural resistance to aging due to his superhuman abilities.

The story of Fury’s eye patch and his life-saving Infinity Formula are partly based on the experiences of Stan Lee, who served in World War II, and the myth of the Graeae. In Greek mythology, the Graeae were three old women who had but one eye and one tooth to share between them, and this myth ultimately gave birth to the iconic eye patch of Nick Fury.
