Who designed Santa Monica proper?

Santa Monica proper was designed by a talented and experienced team of architects, urban planners, and developers. They crafted a dynamic urban plan and experience that consciously respects its unique beachfront setting, while showcasing its vibrant culture, historic charm, and modern appeal.

The plan ensures that residents, visitors and businesses will continue to enjoy the city’s transformation and contribute to its dynamic mix of urban and beachfront lifestyles. The team was led by SOMA Architects, working in collaboration with other architectural firms and urban design consultants, such as The Jerde Partnership and SWA Group.

They also worked with local stakeholders to ensure the design met the community’s expectations and improved the economic, cultural and environmental conditions of Santa Monica. The team chose to allow a mix of uses that maximize the range and intensity of activities within each district, creates inviting outdoor spaces, and develops a walkable, bike- and transit-friendly environment.

The design inherently celebrates the fusion of Santa Monica’s iconic beach town culture and the region’s rich architectural expressions, while providing opportunities for reflection and relaxation.
