Does peace keepers have a boss?

Peacekeepers, as those participating in international peacekeeping operations, have several different organizations that have a role in their activities. The United Nations (UN) is ultimately responsible for the deployment of international peacekeeping forces, a responsibility held by the UN Security Council.

This may be in response to requests for help from a country or occasionally from an internal conflict.

The UN Security Council is supported in its work by the UN Secretariat, particularly by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Their mandate is to help reduce tensions between rival parties and to facilitate inter-state conflicts.

The Secretariat acts in consultation with the relevant troop-contributing countries and is responsible for coordinating the deployment plans and structuring of the peacekeeping forces.

In addition to the UN, regional organizations such as the African Union (AU) or the European Union (EU) may be involved in peacekeeping operations. They might provide military or police forces, support units, or civilian personnel.

The AU and EU will typically rely on the UN as the primary base for their operations.

Above the UN and regional organizations, there are individual countries which provide the peacekeepers. Typically their national forces are involved and the forces are each under their respective country’s government and have their own chain of command.

In some cases, individual countries may have a body responsible for coordinating their forces involved in UN operations.

In summary, there is no direct boss of individual peacekeepers. However, the UN Security Council, the UN Secretariat, relevant regional organizations and the relevant sovereign state all have a role in coordinating different aspects of a peacekeeping operation.
