Why is Apple CarPlay not available on my BMW?

Apple CarPlay is a great feature that gives you access to a variety of features in your vehicle, such as maps, music, messaging, and more, using your iPhone. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay is not available on all BMW models.

The majority of BMW models that are currently available come with BMW’s own infotainment system, known as the iDrive system. The iDrive has similar features as Apple CarPlay and is typically more tailored to the BMW brand.

In order to get Apple CarPlay installed in your BMW, you typically need to have a compatible model and/or purchase a BMW specific adapter or upgrade your iDrive system. You can find more information about which models come with Apple CarPlay and what type of adapter you will need for your model here:

How much does it cost to install CarPlay?

The cost to install CarPlay will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle, as well as the installation method. For most vehicles, the cost of an aftermarket solution from a third-party vendor will range between $399 and $899, depending on the complexity of the installation and the quality of the hardware involved.

This cost covers the CarPlay solution itself, as well as installation and warranty. However, if your vehicle is new enough to be eligible for a factory-installed CarPlay solution from your car manufacturer, the cost of installation may be included in the price of the vehicle, as well as any applicable warranties.

In addition to the cost of the hardware and installation, there is a one-time fee of $50 to enable CarPlay in your vehicle, as well as an ongoing $100/year fee to keep the CarPlay software up to date.

Do I need to download Apple CarPlay?

No, you do not need to download Apple CarPlay. Apple CarPlay comes pre-installed in select vehicles. CarPlay is the smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car. It gives you easy access to Apple Maps, Siri, phone calls, music, and more.

To use CarPlay, you’ll need to connect your iPhone to your car using either a USB or wireless connection. Depending on your car, you may be able to access CarPlay manually, automatically when you get in the car, or wirelessly.

You can check with your car manufacturer to find out if your car is compatible with CarPlay.

Why is my Apple CarPlay not popping up?

There could be a few possible reasons why your Apple CarPlay might not be popping up as expected. To start, make sure your phone is up to date and running iOS 12.0 or later; if not, your CarPlay won’t work.

Additionally, check to make sure that both CarPlay and Bluetooth features are enabled in your device’s Settings; if not, toggle them on.

If those steps don’t solve the issue, plug your phone into the USB port of your vehicle, and if still no luck, visit your dealership to ensure that your car is compatible with Apple CarPlay. After that’s verified, work with them to ensure that the software for Apple CarPlay is up to date.

If you have verified that your car is compatible and updated, but the Apple CarPlay still doesn’t pop up, check your phone again to make sure the USB port and cable is securely connected and functioning properly.

If you have tried the above steps and it didn’t work, it’s possible that you may have a faulty cable or socket. Let your local dealership know so they can check it out and possibly replace it.
