Why is my Slack message grayed out?

Your Slack message could be grayed out for several reasons—the most common being that your Slack status is set to away or do not disturb. When your status is set to away or do not disturb, your messages are grayed out in the chat to indicate that you are not available at the moment.

If your status has been set to away or do not disturb, simply click your profile icon in the top right corner of the Slack window and toggle off the away or do not disturb option.

If you don’t see away or do not disturb being selected, then the message may have been sent in a channel you don’t have access to. To check if this is the case, locate the channel it was sent in and see if you have access to it.

If you don’t, talk to an admin who can give you access to the channel.

Another possibility is that you clicked the grayed-out “send message” button on the left side of the Slack window before adding any message. Ensure that you have actually written the message before clicking “send message”.

If you still have not figured out why your message is grayed out, reach out to a Slack administrator in your workspace who can help you troubleshoot the issue.
