Who becomes a Wendigo in Until Dawn?

In Until Dawn, a 2015 interactive drama survival horror video game, eight friends – Chris, Ashley, Josh, Emily, Samantha, Matt, Mike, and Hannah – take a vacation at the Blackwood Mountain, a fictional mountain located in Washington.

During the course of the game, Chris and Ashley become the unfortunate victims of a curse, transforming them into Wendigos.

The term Wendigo is derived from Algonquian folklore, and refers to a mythical man-beast creature that lives in the wilderness and feeds on human flesh. In Until Dawn, the Wendigos are not supernatural beings, but normal humans who have been cursed by the Native American God and are now cursed to roam around the mountain and hunt down human prey.

The cause of the Wendigo curse varies from game to game, but in Until Dawn it’s most likely due to the consequences of breaking an ages-old treaty between the Native American tribe and the White settlers.

In the game, Josh and his friends unknowingly trespass on an ancient burial ground, leading to Chris and Ashley being cursed.

Once Chris and Ashley become Wendigos, they are driven by an insatiable hunger that compels them to hunt down and consume the other characters, while they slowly transform into the Wendigos we recognize from legends.

These cursed characters move faster, can see better in the dark, possess superhuman strength and agility, and can even turn others into Wendigos by biting them.

How did Aiden become a Wendigo in Antlers?

Aiden’s transformation into a Wendigo in the movie Antlers was the result of a complex chain of events. After being admitted to the hospital, Aiden began having difficulty sleeping. In his sleep-deprived state, he became increasingly paranoid and began seeing things that were not there – specifically he kept seeing a figure made of antlers in the shadows.

Seeing the figure so often began to drive Aiden to obsessive behavior, and his lack of sleep turned his behavior more dark and unpredictable. As the figure in the shadows kept appearing, medicine prescribed by doctors began to have no effect on Aiden’s delusions.

Eventually, Aiden’s grandmother, who was a spiritual healer, figured out the truth – the entity Aiden was seeing was indeed real and was a Wendigo.

Realizing that the only way to cure Aiden would be to confront and defeat the wendigo, his grandmother took him to the forest and performed a ritual that transferred the power of the wendigo from its original body to Aiden.

In effect, Aiden was the vessel chosen to contain the Wendigo spirit, meaning he was now a Wendigo.
